Learn more about the latest macOS releases. The October 2022 update (16.66) is the last build to support macOS Catalina 10.15. Note that new installs of Microsoft 365 for Mac also requires macOS Big Sur 11 or later. Upgrading your operating system to macOS Big Sur 11 or later will allow Office updates to be delivered for your apps. If you continue with an older version of macOS, your Office apps will still work, but you'll no longer receive any updates including security updates. In addition, I also have a m1 macbook pro running Big Sur, but will jump to Ventura on that soon, - hoping the performance will not be hindered being its running only 8GB of RAM.Starting with the November 2022 update (16.67) macOS Big Sur 11 or later is required to receive updates to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Microsoft Defender. That being said, It might be time to upgrade to mac studio m1/m2 while I can still get a decent price for the intel chip mac - oddly enough, the high end intel chip units are still selling for a price close to basic m1 setups. I don’t want to take a possible performance hit if I upgrade to Ventura - as you mentioned, it’s basically optimized for apple chips. I use it to edit videos with filmora 12 in addition to the audio program Hindenburg Pro for my radio show. I’m going to stay with Big Sur for now being that I’m happy with the performance of my 2018 i7 six core mac mini w 16GB of Ram. I’ll try out the other methods you mentioned if it pops up again. I did that and haven’t come across the spinning wheel yet with finder, but it’s a random occurrence, so I have to wait and see. I came across another post that suggested disabling icloud as this has helped a few others with a similar problem. So overall I’d say good luck and definitely consider all your options! Other with intel chips have shared mixed experiences here, some good some bad. I’m not sure if it’d fix your issues but it might be worth a try if none of the fixes I mentioned above worked and you’re not ready to upgrade yet to an ARM chip:)įor me the upgrade definitely improved performance all-round, but since I’m running an M1 chip it’s tough for me to say if it would perform better than Big Sur on your system. I say this because Apple is now quickly phasing out their former Intel line-up, so you might not get the best performance with Ventura (although it might help fix your issue, you might not get the next firmware update anyway and only security updates going forward.)īut hey, ultimately, the decision to upgrade to Monterey is up to you. For example, the ARM M1 and M2 Mac Mini are pretty cheap these days and they are guaranteed to be supported for the next 5-6 years. And I know this isn’t nice to hear but you may also consider if it’s worth investing in a new Mac that supports Apple's new M1 or M2 chip. This means that future macOS updates and new features may not be compatible with your 2018 Mac Mini. I should also mention here that it is good to consider that future versions of MacOS might only support the M1 chips and forward in the future. You could also try resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) and PRAM/NVRAM. You could start by checking the available disk space on your Mac Mini and clearing any unnecessary files or applications. You should probably try some basic troubleshooting steps before deciding whether an upgrade is worth it or not. But the spinning wheel issue could also be due to something else not related to the firmware version, such as a lack of free disk space, a corrupt system file, or a hardware issue. In terms of your spinning wheel issue, upgrading to Ventura could resolve the problem because it includes a lot of bug fixes and Big Sur is a few years old at this point. However, I can try to give you some information that might help you anyway. I wanna start off by saying I cannot provide a definitive answer whether upgrading to Monterey will fix the spinning wheel issue you are experiencing. Not sure what it's like on Intel Macs and if I'm the only one who noticed, but for my M1 Air this made app loading (even for third party apps) like a second or so faster! What stood out for me is the speed bump, which is especially impressive considering it's the first official version.ĭaVinci Resolve is the only app on my mac that seems to be slow to load, not sure if it's not optimised yet or just that it's a very heavy app but everything else is butter lol Also just tested Stage Manager and a few other new features that are cool too, but wow. Immediately after installing I noticed everything is much, much faster than Monterey ever was. just updated the official version and what an upgrade. I've done multiple beta tests before on my M1 MacBook Air but decided not to bother for MacOS Ventura. Hey everyone, I'm a vervent Mac user who's been with MacOS since I was a kid video editing vacation videos on OSX Leopard (10.5.) This is a Ventura appreciation post/vent.
